Rewrites and Revisions

Happy Monday!

I hope you all had a fabulous weekend. Our weather in good ol' Wisconsin has already decided its Spring.

Which is A-MAZ-ING!

Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you look at it, I didn't get to enjoy it.

I spent my weekend revising and rewriting!! Yay!

Yay!

*Looks around*

Yay... (Why is no one else cheering?? :))

No, it is a 'Yay!'. With a big exclamation mark. (That one's for you Leigh. ;))

I actually enjoy revising and rewriting. Thanks to some well thought out suggestions, FRACTION OF STONE, after this weekend is:

1. Absent of plot holes
2. More tense
3. LOTS more internalization
AND...
4. Has 7,000 wore words!!

I know, right? The word count has gone from 65,000 to 72,000. And those words aren't filler, they're emotion and action packed in a way that I believe drives the story forward even better.

So THANK YOU CPs! (This time around its Angie Cothran and Jen Morris.) It has taken seven of you to get FRACTION ready to rock and roll.

Where are you with your WIP? Do you like Rewrites and Revisions? What areas do you find need improvement in your work when you go through and edit?

  1. I hate re-writes lol! I am doing some re-writes and revisions of my own at the moment, and it's challenging, to say the least!

    Congrats on your progress!

  2. That is fantastic work...7000 words is awesome. I've just spend the last two days, re-plotting my story with the new changes from the publisher. Tomorrow I will break the changes down by chp and then I'll start rewriting / revising. I'm excited, but it's a bit daunting...:)

    1. Wow, that sounds sort of like what I did with a few plot points this weekend. And it WAS daunting. I had so many notes! :)

  3. I LOVE rewrites and editing. Initially I just want to get the story down on paper/screen, but then the interesting part starts.

    Keep it up.

    1. Yeah, I thought the same thing too! That writing was the best part. But when you get good suggestions for changes that you know will make your story that much better...I don't know, its a lot of work but totally fun.

  4. I don't mind editing, but proper rewrites...no. Too scary! I'm always afraid to read back and realise that something doesn't make sense and I'm going to have to completely redo it...that's why I always put editing off!

  5. I HATE revisions and rewrites lol But I know I've got some major rewrites on my future, after I move back to the US ;)
I'm glad you like it. I wish I did too.
Congrats on improving your awesome manuscript!

  6. I tend to be very heavy with descriptions and I do use passive voice, so I've been putting off revising my contemporary YA.

Good luck with Fraction of Stone, Kelley. :)

  10. Woah, woah, woah, you live in Wisconsin? I was just there this weekend, and it was cold if my memory serves correct. x3
Maybe it was just Appleton, though. There's also a pretty good chance I'm just a wimp.

    1. Haha. I live in the Milwaukee area. It was like 65 both days this weekend. Which, for us, is NICE! :)

  11. That's great, Kelley! And YAY for you. :)

I'm in the process of editing my WIP (Door to Door), and the one big item I'm putting my eye to is making sure I use action versus dialogue tags when appropriate. So far so good!

    1. Ooo, that's a really good idea. That is one thing I've had to learn as a writer. Don't use dialog tags if at all possible. :)

  15. I actually don't mind revisions. Sure they suck you in and leave you in a deep fog for a few days, but once they're finished, I feel so much better about my book. Congrats on adding that many words! That's awesome! :D

    1. They DO suck you in. There's like this vortex of, 'if I change this, then this will change, which will alter this...'

      Lots of notes. :) haha

  16. You're welcome. ;0)

I don't mind revising but I think I am about DONE with revising mine. I don't know how many more times I can go through it right now. LOL.

  19. Congratulations!! Usually, I don't like editing. But with my current WIP, I enjoyed it because I'm better at it. I loved getting to make it better. Right now my beta readers are reviewing, so I'm sure I'll get to enjoy more editing soon. :)

    1. Yay for Beta readers! It is easier the more you do it, that's for sure. This is my fourth manuscript. But definitely the one I've put the most work in. :)

  20. I am now in my submission missions with sixty poems out the door and two short fiction pieces.

I don't have beta readers, though I keep asking various family members to just check for any errors they can find. I have a writing group but, once you put something up online, it's considered published so it takes away my options if I want to try to submit things somewhere.

  21. I don't understand why I wasn't a follower until now, or that you weren't listed in my sidebar. What the H was I thinking? How did that happen. You are one of my favorite bloggers. That is so awesome how Angela and Jenny (and 5 others) have helped you so much. If you ever need one more, I would love to read.

  23. I'll cheer for you! Yay, Kelley! I'm finding I'm adding words, too, and an so happy for it. I was worried when I finished the first draft and was below 80,000 words. How great that you're getting everything ship-shape!

  24. YAY for getting so much done!! Go you! I'm nearly halfway through drafting my WIP, but I already know I'll need to go back and flesh out the dialogue (among many, many other things!). I wish I could write that many words in two days--you are awesome! Do you think you'll be querying soon?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Well, I literally put a butt print in my chair spending the whole weekend there. :) haha

Yeah, its actually out on query now. I seriously thought it was 'done'. And while I'm very proud of the version I sent out (and it does rest with some awesome agents currently) this version is better. :)

  25. Hey, Kelley! I love Debbie's comics for writers! This one is very fitting for my current rewrites. I'm saving this one to file. I just found one that cracked me up called "A Cautionary Comic for Writers" she did recently about getting sidetracked for 5 hours on the Internet! I don't have the link, but it's on her website. I printed it out and hung it above my computer. It's a mental handslap to stay away from the web while I'm writing!

I'm rewriting my YA at the current moment. I've joined up with a great group on Twitter called #wipmadness. We're doing March Madness right now. It holds me soooo accountable for my work, which I need! You should join us!

    1. Ooo, that sounds like a brilliant idea. I didn't even know there were groups on Twitter...I'm so bad! haha.

  26. Be glad that was your weekend. Computer broke down on me on Saturday. *Sobs* At the library today finally updating my poor blog. I'm so happy that your writing is going so well! I send a big thank you to the CPs too.

  27. Congratulations on the revisions and improvements.

I love rewriting and revisions. There's something so magical about taking something you've created and improving it. Kind of like doing up antique furniture.

I rewrote my entire opening scene last week, and was very pleased with how it turned out.

I hope your revisions continue to do well.

  28. I don't mind revisions at first, especially after a beta reads it and you're working on ideas. It's when it gets into the later edits where it's tedious. Especially when I gt my list of overused/filler/bad words to get rid of. It's quite the large list.

Btw, we have early spring here too in North Dakota. Only a few snow piles left here and there... loving it.
