Short post today.
The results of the 'Do you believe in The One when it comes to love?' poll were as follows:
30% Yes
50% No
20% Unsure
I was totally enthralled by your answers and in many ways wish I held the Jewish beliefs Melissa Sugar wrote about.
I believe that we have one soul mate on earth. I am Jewish and this belief comes from the Kabbalah and it is called B'r sheit, (probably misspelled). The Kabbalah teaches that everyone has one soul mate, the missing part of our soul and the we long to find the missing part of our soul while we are on earth. Before we are born our souls are split in two, half is placed in a male child and the other half in a female, and we spend our lives searching for that one person that completes our soul.
If we are lucky enough to find our true soul mate on earth and we recognize each other and join together as one in union, our love is so strong that it is incapable of breaking and once our souls unite we will become a powerful force in whatever endeavor we take on together.
Many of you said that after you choose someone, they become your One. So there's this idea that, yes, we do have a choice among a few we could be happy with but after we choose one, there is no one else.
That's the boat I'm in.
Thank you to everyone who participated. I love polls. Don't you?
And, since I finished another Self Magazine and always love the things of inspiration at the end, here is what this issue's said:
The only thing better than taking a break from it all is making your way back feeling stronger, clearer and more in control. When you're overwhelmed and you need to escape, allow yourself that luxury. Getting a little distance may be all it takes to feel more focused and appreciative.

That is romantic! Love it.
ReplyDeleteI thought your poll was fascinating. Reading everyone's answers was really fun!
ReplyDeleteThis soul splitting idea sounds like a really cool YA novel premise...:)
ReplyDeleteGreat poll, Kelley! I loved that post...it was one of the deeper posts I've read this week!
ReplyDeleteMelissa's answer is beautiful. I'm changing my vote :)
ReplyDeleteThe soul splitting is cool! Great book idea :) But I'm in the other boat. Again, maybe a good book idea...
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of the Jewish tradition but I'm in your boat Kelley. I love the picture. ;)
ReplyDeleteWhenever I need to regroup, I go back to my hometown. Being around my family always helps me refocus and recharge!
ReplyDeleteThis post was very thought provoking.
ReplyDeleteThat's why it's always good to get back from a holiday.
ReplyDeleteMelissa's take on soulmates for fascinating. Since I didn't comment earlier, I believe there is a 'one' for the moment and you choose that person. I love the idea of slipping away, getting a little distance.
ReplyDeleteI always liked the teaching that 40 days before a baby is conceived, a voice goes out in the heavens announcing who his or her destined one is. I use the spelling beshert, though I've also seen bashert.
ReplyDeleteI too am fascinated by this poll. Although I had a friend in college who claimed that there are definitely 6 people in the world for everyone to be in love with:)
ReplyDeleteI concur. Couldn't have said it better, Melissa. :)
ReplyDeleteFascinating! This was a great topic, Kelley... and I loved reading everyone's opinions on it too :D
ReplyDeleteWow, that is interesting about the Jewish faith.
ReplyDeleteYes...after I turn in my draft to the publisher right at the deadline on Friday, I'm going to take a little break. Get some distance!
I fall in love with people and ideas all the time, but I think that's more platonic love, or admiration, or attraction. Not the same thing I suppose.
ReplyDeleteI love the sentiment behind Melissa's! I'm with you on the paragraph after, though.
ReplyDeleteAnd I use "holy crap" all the time! Sometimes it comes out, and I feel weird, thinking that no one else uses it. Glad to see that you do, too. :o)
