Today, I Saved Seven Lives. And a Fabulous Flash Fiction Contest!

For real, I saved seven lives today.

Well... saved might be slightly over exaggerated. Rescue might suffice.

At my 9 to 5 job, we have a few atriums sprinkled in here and there so sufficient light can shine down on 'cube city'. It is in the atrium next to my cubical that these seven little ducks were born. And were stuck.

So what did we do? Well we spent the whole morning rounding up seven squawking ducklings, putting them in a garbage can and setting them free in the lake behind our building.

That's my good deed for the week.

In writerly news: Candilynn Fite is hosting a monthly flash fiction contest, Follow My Lead. You can go here to check out the full description on her blog and to participate. It looks like a lot of fun. I was recently in New Orleans, which is what the prompt for the flash fiction is, so I think I can come up with a pretty good 300 word or less fiction piece. Or maybe not so fiction :) If you want to see New Orleans through my eyes, you can check out this post.

So, I'm curious. Have you ever saved something's life?? (Again, let's pretend I really did save the ducklings ;) ;))

  1. The contest sounds interesting! I'll have to go check it out!

Congratulations on being a hero! I know the ducks especially appreciate it! :) Most of my rescue stories are like yours, except I'm taking the animal in distress to a vet, and I never know if it's life is saved or not. You'll get to watch the babies grow up, won't you?

  2. OMG They are so flippin' cute! I actually saved a few baby squirrels in my day! lol. They used to get stuck in the ceiling at my old job. After we saved one he stuck around. I named him Dale and he would come by the door everyday and wait for me to come out and feed him almonds. My coworkers weren't too pleased in the summer when he would run in the open door and straight to my desk. They would jump up in their chairs and be like "Theresa! You're squirrel is in here again!" lol I'd walk over to him and be like Dale outside and he'd run outside then sit by the door, little feet up in the air waiting for me. He was adorable!!!!

  3. It's sort of an awful story, but I saved my tea stealing ginger. Someone threw him out of a car into four lanes of traffic when he was a wee little kitty (seriously, he was the size of a hockey puck). We stopped traffic with nothing more substantial than the laser beam stare of doom. It worked, no one hit us, and we took the bleeding kitty to the nearest vet. Now he drinks my tea if I don't guard it.

  4. Congratulations. You saved the cat (so to speak). That means I expect you to be the good guys from here on out. :)

  5. I saved a bird the other day. He smacked into my parents window on their lake cabin. We went to check him out and he flew out of my dad's hands, like he was drunk. Smacked into the cover of the boat lift and fell into the water.

He floated with the waves until he reached the dock of the cabin next door. Then I scooped him out with a fish net and set him in the grass to dry. He was gone later, so I assume he was okay.

  6. Oh, they are so cute! I've always wanted to go to New Orleans, you should have taken me with you. ;) I hope that in my job I save lives a lot.

  8. I once saved a baby bird. Only in 6th grade, I found it at our softball field. No nest, no mom, no nothing. So I brought it home. It was so young it barely had any feathers. But by the end of its second week with me, it was feather covered and learning to fly. If I put it on the ground, it would hop over and jump on my foot. I loved that bird. Right up until my little sister stepped on it. So I guess I was both savior and death for the poor creature. But we got a puppy after, so, that was good :)

Yay for you saving those ducklings! So totally cute!!!

  9. I once grabbed a girl to keep her from falling off a top step while waiting in line for a concert at my school. She wouldn't necessarily have died but she was a little thing and could've been seriously hurt. I saw her falling and just reached out and pulled her back in line. Glad the little duckies are ok. I'll check out the fash fiction contest later.

  10. How cute! That's definitely a heroic act.

I'm constantly 'saving' all kinds of creatures which my children find: bees drowning in the pond, butterflies and dragonflies 'stuck' in the house, hedgehogs which get jammed in the back of our wood pile... we live in a very rural area.

  11. Oh, they're so cute! Good job!
Once, at a horse show, we found a mama dog with five puppies by the side of the road. (They also had another adult stray as a travel companion. I don't know why.) We took them all in and found homes for each of them over the course of the show. :)

  12. Purely adorable! I want one!
The only life I've ever saved was my own.

  13. Okay, the first time *three times, cough* I read your title, I thought it said lines. As in, saved some lines from your wip, maybe. So I was all, what do ducks have to do with lines?

Yeah. Maybe i should pull my head out of the writing cloud occasionally and remember there's a real world out there.

I once saved a turtle that was trying to cross a busy highway. He snapped at me in thanks.

  14. Cute ducklings! I tried to save a baby rabbit when I was about 10. It didn't appear to have a mother, and it was the only one alive in a nest under one of our bushes. We brought it in and gave it whole milk out of an earwax remover (a brand new one). It worked great, but my mom said to leave it outside in its nest during the night. The neighbor's dog came and ate the baby. I caught it in the act~ I was SOOOOOO upset. So I TRIED to save something, but failed. Maybe another opportunity will present itself :)

  15. Awww! Poor little duckies! They are so cute, good thing you found them! I wish exciting things like that happened at my day job, haha.

  16. Awe, so cute. My kids would have wanted me to bring them home. We have a woodpecker that pecks on our windows. His poor mate was "taken care of" by one of my bosses last year. I didn't know about it until one of them let it slip. I was SO mad. They mate for life. So now poor little guy comes and looks at himself in our window, pining after his only love.

  17. Awww, that's cute.

I've never been in a position to save something. The nearest I've come is listening to a friend's problems while she was having a nervous breakdown.

  18. We saved some baby birds that fell out of a tree once. And the other day, I picked up a centipede that was in my basement and put it outside. LOL. I normally just smack anything creepy crawly in my house, but I must have been feeling brave that day.

  19. ADORABLE! Sounds like a good workout, chasing those ducklings. ;)

  20. My daddy and I save puppies and doggies around our neighborhood. The last batch we found got sent to Chicago to good homes! :)

  21. You're a hero! Totally. I can't say that I've saved anyone's life. Not even close. Hmm, what does that say about me?

  22. You DID save them, Kelley Lynn!! There's no other way to look at it. :)) Baby ducks are one of the cutest things on earth! I have two, well, now they're big ducks. That poop a lot. All day long. O_O

  23. Oh! How could I forget! Thank you so much for announcing the contest I'm holding. :)))))

  24. You've reminded me that a bunch of adorable quail babies fell into my parents' window well a couple of years ago. I pulled out gloves and a plastic tray, scooped them all out and released them at the far end of the orchard. Unfortunately two of them had been injured seriously when they fell didn't make it :( But the other four were just fine. Did I mention that quail babies are adorable?

  25. I'm so glad you helped the ducklings! My mom and I used to find newborn kittens left in the trash and save their lives. We even had a tiny kitten bottle to feed them. We couldn't save all of them, but we saved quite a few! I tried to save a baby bird once, even carried him around in a fanny pack to school, but he didn't survive. :(

  26. Ah, you're too sweet! You like younger men, I can fix you up with my son? Hehe
