Overcoming Adversity Blogfest

Today and tomorrow is the Overcoming Adversity Blogfest hosted by Nick Wilford. A bunch of us are participating in order to create an anthology which will be sold to help pay for Nick's Stepson's education. (Andrew has cerebral palsy and his education options are limited in Scotland.) I pray that this anthology will help Andrew in his dream to work in film.

As I was thinking about Overcoming Adversity, I realized I really haven't. I am a very blessed person. So what I have written for the anthology is what I hope I will do in the face of adversity. What I think we all hope we'll do.

Adversity: A condition marked by misfortune, calamity, or distress.

There is much one can do in the face of adversity. After all, we usually don’t ask for it. We don’t want for the event to occur, for the road to get tougher.

We can go around, skirt the danger, the oppression, the struggle. We can pretend the adversity isn’t there. Ignore, put on blinders, and forge around the obstruction.

We can turn around. Retrace our steps. Try and get to a place where the adversity is not. Put as much distance between it and us as we can manage.

We can stop. Cry, shout, scream. Ask why me. Why you? Why should anyone have to face the adversity which is before us? Refuse to move. Forward, around, or back. Resign ourselves to being beaten because what we have to face isn’t fair.

Or we can overcome.

Adversity is there to show us who we are. Because our real selves are not found in times of peace and harmony. In times of ease and good fortune. We find ourselves when the road is rough and decide to travel it anyway. When we see someone else struggling with the rocky road and sharp edges and vow to help. Adversity is there to show us what we’re capable of, because without it, we would never know.

Overcome: To get the better of in a struggle or conflict. Defeat.

Make sure you jump around and visit the others participating in the fest!

  4. Oh, this is so true. This is a nice reminder for those days when we don't think we can make it through the day. If we can, we're a stronger person than we were at the beginning.

  13. I love your realistic perspective on adversity!
Since it's here to stay, the trick is how to deal with and manage adversity, as opposed to running away.

  14. A very eloquent piece, Kelley. No one wants to deal with adversity, but it makes us stronger in the end and helps us to focus on what's important. Thanks for taking part!

  17. Yeah, girl. We never want to face adversity, but it feels so powerful to do it when the time comes. I love how you used the definitions as bookends for your writing. Lovely. You are going to rock any adversity that comes your way!

  18. "We find ourselves when the road is rough and decide to travel it anyway."

That is so true, no matter the journey - we are all formed in the fire!

  19. Good post, Kelley. We only know what we're capable of when we're faced with challenges. How we respond is our choice.

  25. Waving 'hello' from the bloghop :)

So very true and, a lot of times, adversity is the pressure that either breaks us or forges us into stronger people.

  26. Well said! That's definitely how I *try* to approach adversity at least (though I can't say I'm always successful!). Thanks for sharing this!

  34. I am not participating in the blogfest, but I've enjoyed reading all these uplifting quotes. I just got done running a half marathon on Sunday and I'll tell you what...that last mile was all adversity to me! It took everything I had not to slow down, or walk, or cry...it's all about pushing through!

  35. Yes! Here's to overcoming the problems we face.
